Industry anlysis of Retail Grocery Industry Essay -- essays research p
Industry Analysis à à à à à In order to analyze an industry, it is important to determine where it is in the industry lifecycle. During the 1970ââ¬â¢s and 1980ââ¬â¢s the retail grocery industry was expanding at a phenomenal rate. Throughout this boom period, the number of large grocery stores was rising and forcing the existingâ⬠Mom and Popâ⬠grocery stores out of the industry. à à à à à In the early 1990ââ¬â¢s, the retail grocery industry began leaving the growth stage and entered the maturity stage in the industry lifecycle. This was caused by increased market saturation and slowing growth rates. Between 1995 and 1996 the growth rates were the lowest they had been in the past twenty years. The main reason for this was the vast number of grocery stores that had been built in growth stage and the emergence of new grocery retail formats such as warehouse clubs and dollar stores. This increased competition forced firms to compete with each other for the same customers by lowering prices. à à à à à Enter WalMart. Walmart was not even in the grocery industry in the early 1990ââ¬â¢s but through excellent supply chain management and extremely low everyday prices have forced their way as one of the dominant players in the retail grocery industry. Industry surveys indicate that the five largest chains (WalMart, Kroger, Costco, Albertsons, and Safeway) accounted for approximately 37.5% of total sales in 2002. à à à à à The 1990ââ¬â¢s were an important time because of the arrival of new technologies that would change the retail grocery industry. Scanners, Elcetronic Data Interchanges, and the internet have all sped up and lowered the costs of business operations. WalMart was one of the early adopters of this technology and had a competitive advantage over its competitors. New technologies being pioneered now include self-serve checkouts, RFIDââ¬â¢s, and kiosks, they will all eventually change how we shop at grocery stores today. à à à à à Walmartââ¬â¢s arrival as the largest grocer in North America has caused quite a stir in the retail grocery industry. Walmartââ¬â¢s low prices have caused an industryââ¬âwide obsession with consolidation. Many firms are cutting costs any chance they can, forcing some firms to move upmarket. ââ¬Å"The traditional supermarket concept no longer has a profitable future in most ... ...lay a part in the consumerââ¬â¢s decision but in the end eggs from one store are the same as eggs from another store. The consumer can also compare prices from various stores to get the best deal on their groceries. Supplier Power à à à à à Supplier power has been pretty high in the past because grocery stores had very few options of where they could get their goods and had even less of a say of how much to pay for these goods. Recently WalMart has started to change the balance of power away from the supplier. By being so large and having the power of making or breaking a product based solely o if WalMart carries it they can demand certain prices. Another way to combat high supplier power is to introduce private label brands. For example Giant eagle carries its own brand of peas it is not as dependable of its pea suppliers as it was before carrying their own brand. Some suppliers have decided to try and regain power by merging with other suppliers such as Gillette/Proctor & Gamble and Phillip Morris/Kraft. It appears that after a long time of high supplier power the playing field is starting to level itself off and it appears this will continue into the future.

The Current State of Skodaââ¬â¢s Business in the Uk
Introduction Skoda, as a car manufacturer with a long history, has become one of the companies of Volkswagen who is the largest vehicle manufacturer in Europe since 1991 (Volkswagen, 2012). There is a fast development of Skoda in recent years. Its deliveries to customers in 2011 increased by 15. 3% compared to 2010 (Skoda, 2012). This report aims to: à · evaluate the current situation of Skoda in the UK using the SWOT analysis. à · analyze the business environment of Skoda in the UK by using the PESTLE analysis in detail. à · create the possible strategies for Skodaââ¬â¢s future development based on the analysis.Company Overview With twenty years development supported by Volkswagen, Skoda achieved a new high record of sales for 45282 vehicles in the UK, which occupied over 5% of the whole sales volume of the brand. In the market of the UK, Skoda has launched seven models, namely Citigo, Fabia, Roomster, Rapid, Octavia, Superb and Yeti (Skoda, 2012). SWOT analysis Both strong an d weak points of the business situation about Skoda in the UK can be seen in the SWOT analysis (see appendix I). The most obvious strength is the satisfaction provided to customers.Skoda has been doing good job on improving their products and services to meet customersââ¬â¢ demands. The company surveys their feelings and opinions directly to get the correct needs of customers. At the same time, some chances might be taken by Skoda to boost sales. Focusing on the vehicle itself as the marketing strategy, Skodaââ¬â¢s competitors leave the space to Skoda to focus on ââ¬Ëhappy Skoda customersââ¬â¢. It avoided the direct competition focusing on the product itself with other rivals and became the ââ¬Ëunique selling propositionââ¬â¢ of Skoda in the vehicle market (Times, 2008).In contrast, there are still some persistent weaknesses and threats of Skoda. One weak point, for example, is the negative effects from the ââ¬Ëimage of poor quality, design, assembly, and materi alsââ¬â¢ in the past. Although Skoda had tried to make many efforts to make the brand image better, it was proved to fail in the mid-market range by a brand named Health Check. Meanwhile, the threats for Skoda are ââ¬Ë50 different car makers selling 200 modelsââ¬â¢ in the UK. That means there is a highly competitive market in the UK, ââ¬Ëpotential buyers would overlook Skodaââ¬â¢.Informing the customers effectively and developing potential customers are the challenges for Skoda (Times, 2008). PESTEL analysis There are six parts of PESTLE analysis about business environment in the UK which focus on the external elements, namely, political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors. Some changes of political element, such as raising the VAT, are made by the UK government to increase the cost of buying cars. Plus, the UK customers are encouraged by British government to buy cars which are environmentally friendly because the road tax will be reduce d if people have small engines cars. That means the vehicle with smaller engine will attract more customers due to the financial reason. At the same time, the British car industry is affected by the economic recession. There is less demand which leads to fewer new vehicles being sold. People prefer to buy second hand cars instead of new cars because of the low price. The economic factors are more essential than the quality and design of cars because low consumption of new car means less profits the companies can gain (Gough, 2012).For the social element, the lifestyle changes of consumers may influence the design of a vehicle. Many bigger seats and larger space are provided in the cars for meeting the requirements of ââ¬Ëthe growing number of obese people in the UKââ¬â¢. In addition, the development of technology is a chance for companies to reduce production cost. Advertising their products widely on the Internet will attract more potential buyers. There might be some new lega l limitations of driving cars in the future. The speed limits may be considered more to ensure the citizenââ¬â¢s safety. Finally, the environmental issues, for instance the global warming, will be the pressure of vehicle manufacturers. They have to think about how to reduce the pollutant emission to be responsible for their society (Gough, 2012). Future strategy Two main suggested approaches aiming to solve the challenges of Skoda according to SWOT and PESTLE analyses are as follows: à · Invest a lot on promotion. Such as advertise their product on Internet and TV for informing UK customers the high quality and low price of the cars to change the bad brand image. Expand the model range for meeting different demands of British customers to increase the market share in heavy competition. Conclusion and Recommendations It can be found that the high satisfaction and high quality with low price are the strong points of Skoda. Although some weak points exist, they can be solved by adve rtising of telling the high quality and expanding the range of model to gain more British customers. In summary, Skoda should overcome the negative effects by using its advantages to boost sales and increase market share in the UK.

CompareandContrast Essay Microsoft vs Apple
Their products can last years like their laptops for example, but if you have a windows based laptop you need to replace it very year in order to keep up with technology. When talking about what to compare with these two companies I am going to focus on the logo, stocks, and their operating systems. Apple is a more consumer-based product, while Microsoft tends to reach out more towards businesses. Apple's logo is more classic and just a picture of an apple with a bite out of the apple. While Microsoft's is just the name Microsoft with four colored squares that look like a window.Microsoft looks like a combination of Google and Apple's design elements. Microsoft tries to use design elements from multiple companies in order to help them with the public. No more logo in technology is more known than Apple's. Microsoft has tried many times to rebind themselves. According to Matt Burns, Microsoft's logo is ââ¬Å"simply meâ⬠, and I couldn't agree more (Burns, 2012, Para. 3). Microsof t has regained its position as the number 2 most valuable US company right behind Number 1 Apple. Apple is a maker of closed and proprietary Technology products.Apple has earned a commanding market value of 669 billion in comparison to Microsoft's 408 billion. Apple develops its in secret and unveils them to the public with presentations shown to people all over the world. Apple and Microsoft are in a dead heat this year with shares of Apple rising 21. 5% and Microsoft rising at 20. 3%. ââ¬Å"During the intermediate term, it's a close battle, too. Shares of Apple are up 69. 8% over the past three years, just marginally ahead of the 63. 6% rise by Microsoft. (Karate, 2014, p. ) The edge goes to Apple; over the last five years Apple is up 314% compared to Microsoft 91 % gain. Contrary to popular belief prior to the phone 6 coming out, Microsoft outsold Apple on cellophanes. The trouble for Microsoft though is only 5. 8 million out of 36 million was smartness. Apple SO X and Microsoft Windows are two of the most used operating systems. When is comes to the operating systems Apple has more software bundled with their operating system than Microsoft. There are more titles available on the Windows platform. SO X has more offerings in music and video production. You can run windows non Mac, but you can't run SO X on windows. So you have the best of both worlds on an Apple computer. When it comes to security of the operating system a vicious program can change the system on windows without you even knowing it. When it comes to Apple, SO X added ââ¬Å"sandbagging to improve protection against mallard and Trojan. â⬠(ââ¬Å"Apple vs.. Microsoft,â⬠2014, Para. 6) When it comes to viruses you have to buy additional software to protect it on a Microsoft operating system, but with Apple it comes built into their operating system. When you want to upgrade your operating system it is more affordable with Apple. If you wanted the newest operating system with Apple it would be free if you had the prior operating system, and with Microsoft it would cost 1 19. 99 for just the upgrade version. With Apple you can just install it from the App store, but with Microsoft you would have to go to a tore to purchase it. While SO X has the benefit off faster startup and higher performance, the graphics applications run faster on Windows. The question of what company is better in my opinion is Apple. All the hardware and software just works well together. Apple offers an absolutely flawless integration of hardware and software. Only with Apple do you get a system built by the same group who makes the operating system, the applications and the computer. The Apple operating system and its hardware make for a far more reliable, less troublesome environment than Windows. Microsoft just does not have a consistent, coherent and unified brand like Apple clearly does.
Branches of Philosophy Essay
Thesis This essay project with answer different questions to the six branches of Philosophy. The branches are Metaphysics-is something real? Epistemology-How do we know? Ethics-What is right or wrong? Aesthetics- Is something beautiful? Political- What government is best? And Social- How should we act in in society. Six Branches of Philosophy There are six branches of philosophy. There is Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics, Aesthetics, Political, and Social. Each branch asks us all specific types of questions that we ask ourselves each and every day. Some of these questions we ask without even realizing that we have done so. Metaphysics is the first branch of Philosophy in this discussion. This asks the question of what is real. At an early age we are taught that there is a heaven and earth. At different times we ask ourselves is there really a heaven. Based on what we are taught I believe there is a heaven and that there will come a time in our life that we will be in the place created by God called heaven. According to the bible, God created man from the dust of the earth. We live in the physical world and the spiritual world depends on each personââ¬â¢s spiritual belief. I believe each one of us has a soul. I believe the soul stays around loved ones until the day of reckoning. I believe all people have free will but different circumstances determine what happens to us thru fate. The psychological world I believe consists of our mind and the world that we chose to create for ourselves to live in. The Epistemology branch asks us the question of how is anything known. Things that are known are taught to us from our parents and by teachers in school. We are taught different things thru text books and by experience. Thru different experiences we learn how to conduct ourselves around other people and we gain knowledge by studying the different works of scientists and scholars. There are not any limits to human understanding. Each personââ¬â¢s understanding depends on them. Some people understand things differently than others and each personââ¬â¢s limits differ from others. I donââ¬â¢t believe there is a relationship between faith and reason. Faith goes along with ethics and morals. I donââ¬â¢t fully understand what artificial intelligence is. The next branch of philosophy is the Ethics branch. We are taught from an early age the difference of right and wrong. Laws tell us what is or isnââ¬â¢t right and as humans if we break these laws we are punished. To me being a good person means to follow the golden rule ââ¬Å"Do unto others as you would have them do unto youâ⬠. I believe that virtue does lead to happiness. If you do what is right by others then others will have the tendency to follow your lead. I believe society affects morality. This all depends on the circumstances in which you live. If you live in an area that has a lot of crime and hatred then you have the tendency to follow others in that area. If you set high moral standards for yourself then no matter where you live or the types of people you are surrounded with wonââ¬â¢t affect you. I think that morality is more culture based. Each person has to choose how they apply the morals they are taught at an early age to their adult lives. Each person has different morals that they live by and have to decide how these will be applied. The next branch of philosophy we are going to discuss is the Aesthetics branch. This brings up the question of what is beautiful. In my opinion beauty is in the eye of the beholder and each culture has what they regard as to what is beautiful. Art depicts the creatorââ¬â¢s feelings or ideas as to what they believe beauty is. Art can be successful and valuable to the creator and also to the person that enjoys different art forms. To one person a piece of art might have beauty to it and to another person it might be just horrendous. So therefore beauty in art may or may not matter to all people. The next topic is the political branch of philosophy. I believe the best type of government is the democratic government. This form of government, people do have a small voice in different matters. I think the government should have limited power and that the government should listen to the common people as to what the needs of the population are. I believe that if the common person had the ability to be more involved in the government of today then the needs of the common person would be made possible thru a vast majority voice. The last branch of discussion is the Social branch. I believe this branch is determined thru the ethics branch of philosophy. People shouldnââ¬â¢t have to give up rights just to live in a specific society. We should be able to live our lives the way we now and by the morals and ethics we have built for ourselves. I think some people act according to the surroundings they are in at different times. With many different cultures of society today, I believe there is a large language barrier. With all the different cultures communications has become a big issue. Each culture believes that their language should be the language spoken. I believe that there needs to be one universal language spoken and then different societies of people wouldnââ¬â¢t feel as if they were being mistreated or neglected. Reference: Baird, F. Team Work Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Team Work - Essay Example The Belbin theory of team building states that in order to build a good team, a workplace should be assessed in great detail to look at the strength and weaknesses of individuals. The information learned at this stage can be used in selecting the right people for the right task. It will help in building good working relationship because people with the right skills will be doing the right tasks and hence will enjoy success and authority over what they do and this will in turn make them more confident and will help them achieve their targets with ease. It will also help the development of high performing teams because right people will be doing the right work. This will create positive synergies and generated output will greater than the sum of inputs by the team. It will also help build mutual trust and understanding because all the team members will know that right people are doing the right job and hence it will be easier for all team members to communicate, report any blunders and take the corrective action as a team if necessary. All of this will build a winning team which will work extremely efficiently in congregation to achieve their tasks, goals and target within the given span of time. Belbin also gave a clear definition of team members. He believed that personality hardly matters in team setting. An individual should be judged by the way he behave, contributes and interrelates with the other team members and sees them as his peer. Team working can help team members in working in the field in which they are strong in and eliminating their weak aspects by assigning some of the tasks to people who are good at one of the team memberââ¬â¢s weakness. In other words, team work is a congregation of strengths and elimination of weaknesses. Everyone in a team can focus on the core competencies while letting other team members do the task in which one is weak in. This is an impressive utilization of the congregational strengths that a team has. It leads the t eam to be more efficient, productive and time efficient. As a result, many of the large organizations divide their work in projects to be completed by competent team of individuals having varied skills sets and way of think. This eliminates the problem of being stuck in tasks and all the work flows smoothly which benefits the entire organization. During research done on the topic, it was found that balance is the key in the success of a team and individualââ¬â¢s that are part of a team. Too much of one kind of skills may lead to a team that may not be able to operate as efficiently as a team that has varied skill sets. Hence, all kinds of skills should be given a weightage when composing a ideal team. This weightage should then be compared with the skills required in a job and team composition should not be complete until and unless the two are not in equilibrium or the sum of skills sets required in a job and sum of skill sets of a team are equal. Only then an ideal team will be formed, when both are in equality. Belbin allowed certain types of weaknesses in a team. These include people who are forgetful, people who delegate too much work leaving too little for them, people who are slow, perfectionists, bad-humored and specialist in their old fields. All of these weaknesses are accepted because there is no incompatibility in the teamââ¬â¢s targets and all of these weaknesses are personality based and not work based. Hence, Belbin believes that these types of weaknesses in a team setting are allowable and does not make much difference as compared to work related weaknesses. The personal example that I would like to share through this essay is when I was completing a research work in a group. I encountered people of diverse personality

For postmodernists, the debate on whether the mass media has created a Essay
For postmodernists, the debate on whether the mass media has created a mass culture is no longer tenable. Evaluate this claim - Essay Example However, in this globalised world, these geographical lines have blurred due to the far reaching media. That is, omnipresent media reaches various territories cutting across geographical lines and covers the activities of specific cultures and broadcasts or reports in a certain way, so that culture becomes a mass culture. In todayââ¬â¢s age of technology and information, media influences every aspect of human life. The thinking and the attitude of the people towards a particular issue is shaped by the media or shaped by how the media shows or broadcasts or reports. The manner in which cultures are represented in media has a major impact on the way people look and imbue that culture. The mainstream mass media in the form of television, movies, newspapers, internet, etc has the ability to dominate the airwaves as well as the ââ¬Ëmind wavesââ¬â¢ of the spectators or audience, ââ¬Ëinjectingââ¬â¢ their view as our view. This form of injecting their view as our view mainly leads to the creation of mass culture. From earlier centuries, it is a common knowledge that for a nation to reach the top echelons, its armed forces has to be strong. But, now along with the armed power or ââ¬Å"hard powerâ⬠, the concept of ââ¬Å"Soft Powerâ⬠or mass media is turning out to be one of the vital factors for a nationââ¬â¢s development and importantly for the development of mass culture. With media entering majority of the homes and thereby minds of majority of the world population, it is used by nations, organizations and many other entities to optimally tune the peopleââ¬â¢s mind, making many of them exhibit specific behaviours, thereby leading to the formation of a mass culture. Thus, mass media is playing a major and influencing role in the creation of mass culture and this notion has found favour among majority of the Postmodernist thinkers. Human Papilloma Virus Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Human Papilloma Virus - Essay Example This paper critically reviews recent concepts in genital HPV linked to diseases, disease prevention, viral prevention, viral testing, and treatment. Health Canada goals and strategies for the control of human papillomavirus infection are represented (Rodriquez 2010). Periodic respiratory papillomatosis is chiefly a disease of children in whom several papillomas arise in the upper aerodigestive tract, involving the larynx and vocal cords. The papillomas collectively instigates thwarting papillomas might amount to respiratory suffering. Both high and low risk HPV-DNA series have been established in the papillomas. Although the viruses linked to the respiratory papillomatosis are not contacted through sexual intercourse, they are nonetheless most likely genital in origin, contacted during labor. Anogenital human papillomaviruses infection are chiefly transmitted through sexual intercourse, though in smaller cases there seems to be further, or optional, paths of transmission. Some crucia l proof asserts that rare cervical and penile infections may be contacted during labor through exposure to HPV extant in the maternal birth canal or external warts. A lot of concern has been placed on papillomatosis that is assumed to be contacted in this way. However, some peripheral anogenital warts may be contacted during labor as well (Brotzman & Julian 2006). 2. ... This paper critically analyses current HPV concepts and control issues including epidemiology, prevention, testing and burden of infection. Objectives of HPV control in Canada include establishing and evaluating the prevalence of HPV infection diminishing situations of HPV linked diseases, and promoting HPV targeted rudimentary science and clinical research. The advancement of vaccines is optimistic that the prevention of transmission and acquisition of the viral STD. There is a wide range of human papillomaviruses, which are over seventy types, and of these, over twenty infect mucosal tissue and can be transmitted through sexual intercourse. Human papillomaviruses are connected to the pathogenesis of cancer of the uterine cervix, which is the second most collective cause of cancer and cancer fatalities in women worldwide. Recent research shows that there is prevalent 80 percent of cases happening mostly in the developing world. Aggressive squamous cervical cancer is heralded by pren eoplastic lesions that can be established on Papanicolou (Pap) smear and consequently treated. The goal of screening for these precursor lesions has been linked to 90 percent reduction of cervical cases in some Western countries. Conceivably, over twenty types of this cancer linked types of HPV have been established; the most collective are types 16 and 18(Apple et al., 2005). These viruses are capable of integrating into the human genome, and by a range of mechanisms and mutations, including viral protein production and binding of human suppressor and retinoblastoma proteins, amount to unregulated mutations, and ultimately to malignant changes. Further, Oncogenic human papillomaviruses series have been established in the instantaneous
